TheBestofToons.net has been a private, not-for-profit, ad-free site for many years, celebrating the works of great cartoonists who have allowed us to share their work. None the costs, associated with providing the site, have been passed on to the visitors or cartoonists, in any way, nor has this site been advertisement supported. Each cartoon also served as a link back to the cartoonists' sites and I believe that I have had permission from each of the cartoonists to display their work in such a manner.
I'd like to extend my gratitude to those cartoonists who have participated in providing their works and hope this site has increased their Web exposure by some meaningful measure. For those other cartoons, which I also enjoy but did not have permission to share, I provided a link to their page, to facilitate locating them easily.
However, I've read that another site which served as a search engine to so-called torrents, http://torrent-finder.com, has been seized by the Department of Homeland Security, while mirror site http://torrent-finder.info remains in operation, allegedly with exactly the same code. I believe their argument is that they don't and didn't host any copyrighted material: that they only link(ed) to other sites. Many other sites have also been seized, by the Department of Homeland Security, though I'm unsure of the exact circumstances.
Frankly, I'm confused by the whole situation, by other recent United States District Court decisions, and by many of the Department of Homeland Security's recent actions. If it is illegal to link to another site, which may be because their site is a trademark or for any other reason, we want to find out exactly what is necessary to be compliant with the law, and need to re-acquire permission from the various cartoonists (so as to have that on-file) before resuming operations. I'm sure this will raise similar questions for search engines, other than http://torrent-finder.com, though I'm equally sure they have greater resources to defend their positions. This is a not-for-profit site that simply doesn't have the same resources to bring to bear on the situation.
Folks, we just don't have millions of dollars for lawyers, fees and fines to find out the hard way that this site isn't completely compliant.
I thank you for following this site, over the years. Displaying dynamically changing content was one of my first programming efforts and I enjoyed it as well. I hope that you will continue to visit the sites of the cartoonists who have contributed to this site in the past.
